Stand Up Rahul Movie Review

Debutant director Santo attempts a new-age rom-com with Stand Up Rahul. You have a sensitive male protagonist with issues that stem from all he witnessed as a child. You have the dreamy female lead who has watched far too many rom-coms like this one and craves a passionate romance. Then there’s the film itself, which veers between being feminist and regressive, and you’re not sure where it falls at the conclusion.

Rahul (Raj Tarun) has divorced parents. His father (Murli Sharma), a National Award-winning destitute filmmaker, wants him to pursue his passion for stand-up comedy, but his mother (Indraja), an air hostess, wants him to have a steady job and income so he does not end up like his father. Despite their protests, Rahul is quite clear about what he wants. He doesn’t want to marry; instead, he hopes to one day pursue stand-up comedy. If he’s truly good at it, it’ll be a completely different conversation.

Shreya Rao is another (Varsha Bollamma). It’s funny that the director titled this picture Stand Up Rahul rather than Stand Up Rahul & Shreya, considering she clearly has some life issues to work out. She battles with weight concerns, fending off their creepy boss Satya Narayana (Vennela Kishore) – a Steve Jobs want tobe who keeps hitting on her – and her biggest issue in life – struggling to stand up to her father and tell him she doesn’t want to marry the man of his choice. Because she want romance, passion, and the man of her choice.

Apart from being sexist, the film that follows veers between being relatable, good, and mind-numbingly uninteresting. We’re supposed to believe that Rahul is the type of man who will comfort his girlfriend with a hot water bottle and cook for her when she’s on her period, but he’ll also deliver a stand-up routine in which he’ll rant about how women have it oh-so-easy at work, get promotions because of their looks, and, of course, pay disparity doesn’t even exist in his world. During a diatribe, he adds, “The guys toil and come out looking like zombies after a hard day of labour, while the women look like models.” It doesn’t make sense given that his mother and girlfriend are both professional ladies.

Even more perplexing is Shreya’s plan to make this man who doesn’t want to marry into someone who is happy and content with his situation. She will embrace his love of comedy, but she will also sulk if he does not behave the way she expects him to. He’s losing his temper because of work stress, and she’s putting up with it. Despite this, you can see why Rahul and Shreya work — they seem to be a perfect match. And this is where Santo excels. He makes you want to believe in their odd romance, and he makes you want to hope that they end up together — marriage or no marriage.

Take a seat. Rahul is not a horrible film by any means, and it even gets off to a good start. When it comes to the vulnerabilities of both of its protagonists, the film is quite self-aware. When a character urges Shreya to express her mind regardless of her family’s present, you can see why she won’t. You can also understand why someone like Rahul would find it difficult to hold down a career or consider marriage, even if he wants to impress the women in his life. The film also suffers from’second half syndrome,’ which occurs when the characters and their difficulties are set up so beautifully in the first half that things go wild and occasionally lose focus in the second half.

This is the second film in recent memory that relies on stand-up comedy as a crucial component of the plot and then fails to produce the expected chuckles. This is despite the fact that the stand-up routines were written by four different people. Santo’s writing could have been sharper, especially in the emotional scenes. The film’s direction is new, as is the music by Sweekar Agasthi, which fits with the narrative, as well as the cinematography by Sreeraj Raveendran. Raj Tarun slips into Rahul’s skin as long as he’s monkeying around; it’s the emotional sequences that he issues with, although this is also down to the writing. Varsha Bollamma effortlessly performs in a role that is perfectly up her alley. The rest of the cast, including those who play Rahul and Shreya’s friends, do well as well.

Stand Up Rahul is the type of movie you want to see with a big bowl of popcorn, and while it has flaws, it also works in bits and pieces. If you enjoy breezy rom-coms, you should check it out.
