Mere Desh Ki Dharti is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Faraz Haider and produced by Vaishali Sarwankar under the banner of Carnival Motion Pictures, part of entertainment conglomerate Carnival Group. The film has an ensemble cast of Divyenndu Sharma, Anant Vidhaat, and Anupriya Goenka and rotates around two engineers and their transforming journey in life. The film also portrays the harsh realities of farmers in the villages of India.

‘Mere Desh Ki Dharti’ is a humorous yet inspirational take on the lives and journey of young engineers Ajay and his friend Sameer from being abject urban failures to icons of rural India.

‘Mere Desh Ki Dharti’ delves at issues such as agricultural debt, suicide, and much more. Ajay and Sameer are two city engineers who are dealing with identical issues. While Ajay dreams of starting his own business but finds obstacles, Sameer works hard to gain a promotion so he can ask his wealthy sweetheart for her hand in marriage. But Ajay’s startup ambition fails, he loses his job, and his father kicks him out. Sameer is turned over for a promotion, quits his job, and is unable to face his fiancée or her father. Disillusioned and disheartened, they decide to commit suicide in a village rather than the chaos of the city, so that everyone believes they have fled and would not hunt for them.

They arrive in Salamatpur, Madhya Pradesh, and the story begins with hackneyed vignettes of poor locals who are charitable to a fault and odd in equal measure–garishly dressed singers, an Elvis Presley lookalike at a village fair, and a senile daadi with a scathing tongue. Scratch the surface of the vibrant environment, and you’ll find the shadow of farmer suicides. The couple seeks to right the wrongs, but they rile up the local bank manager, who retaliates by penalizing the farmers and ordering them to repay their debts within six months or surrender their lands. The angry crowd wants to kick the lads out, but Ajay feels they can get out of their bind if they work together.

The film begins on a high note and continues with a steady stream of amusing episodes including the two heroes’ mishaps with tough daddies, deceitful clients, loan sharks, and so on. The second part is entertaining until you see the standard over-the-top bumpkins singing and dancing.

When farmer suicides are involved, the situation becomes precarious. The film attempts to touch the audience’s emotions but occasionally becomes overly sentimental. The film’s runtime of 110 minutes should indicate that the screenplay is taut, but it becomes drab and things seem half-baked, rushed, and too convenient–the heroine’s (Anupriya Goenka) opportunistic and money-minded father’s abrupt change of heart, making a drone and pesticide sprinkler from scrap because engineers, to name a few.

The actors–both lead and supporting–are the film’s strongest point. While Divyendu Sharma impresses as the impetuous and hot-headed happy camper with a never-say-die attitude, Anant Vidhaat Sharma holds his own as the more pessimistic and serious Sameer. Anupriya is nice, but it’s Inaamulhaq (Pappan Khan) who stands out as the quirky banjo party guy and shayar who keeps everything together. Bijendra Kala as Dubey Ji is also excellent.

The direction by Faraz Haider is adequate, but the storyline leaves much to be desired. Piyush Mishra’s words stand out in numerous sequences, particularly those set in tiny towns. It’s entertaining if you don’t get too deep into the multi-layered challenges afflicting the country’s farmers and just watch it for the two friends’ journey from urban losers to rural heroes.
