In the age of superhero movies and streaming platforms, romantic comedies are becoming increasingly rare. They are almost non-existent in theaters, especially in the post-pandemic era, and the only venues where they are distributed are, paradoxically, streaming services. Romantic comedies set in science fiction are even rarer. The rarest are romantic comedies that use a science fiction premise to examine timeless topics like immigration, financial imbalance, and bigotry. And that is exactly what director Christopher Winterbauer and screenwriter Max Taxe have accomplished with their ambitious film ‘Moonshot.’

The plot is set in 2049 and revolves around Walt (Cole Sprouse), an easygoing barista, and Sophie (Lana Condor), a college student who appears to have figured out her life. Walt is keen to see the colonized Mars, whilst Sophie resolves to visit the Red Planet because her boyfriend is there. After Walt becomes a stowaway on the same space shuttle that Sophie has boarded, circumstances force them to collaborate. Here’s everything you need to know about ‘Moonshot’s’ finale. Synopsis of the Moonshot Plot

In 2049, mankind have colonized Mars, with billionaire Leon Kovi (Zach Braff), an Elon Musk-like figure, driving the charge. Walt practically worships the man and aspires to follow in his footsteps and go on adventures. It would be an exaggeration to claim that Walt lacks a feeling of purpose in his life. So there’s that. He urgently wants to go to Mars. He has, however, changed his college major 16 times, and he now has no choice but to graduate. He had applied for a position in the Kovi Industries Student Mars Program 36 times and was turned down each time. And now the moment for him to travel to Mars is swiftly approaching. He is chronically broke and works as an assistant barista to a robot at a university café.

Sophie, on the other hand, has a plan. Her lover (Mason Gooding) and his family are currently on Mars. They want to produce a plant that can eat waste after he returns to Earth and she graduates, as garbage has become as huge a problem as one can imagine by 2049. She is also well-off monetarily. When she was 14 years old, her parents died. Calvin’s family eventually took her in. They’ve become her family for all intents and purposes since then. She meets Walt at a party at her house, and Walt makes an unfavorable impression on her. Later that night, Walt meets Ginny (Emily Rudd), an astrophysicist major from one of his classes. They begin talking, and an instant bond develops between them. They exchange a kiss in front of the rocket that will send the next group of pupils to Mars as the night turns to day. Ginny discloses that she is heading to Mars just as she is about to leave. Apparently, she was undecided, but after conversing with Walt, she has changed her mind.

Walt’s 37th application is also turned down. He runs into Sophie again and notices that she is depressed since Calvin has accepted a position on Mars, prolonging his stay there indefinitely and unraveling their plans. Sophie decides to pay for her travel on Walt’s advice. After all, she knows everyone on Mars. She can also afford it. Meanwhile, Walt passes through customs with Sophie’s assistance and sneaks into the ship, believing no one has seen him. Later, he realizes how wrong he was.

Sophie is the one who first discovers him and is terrified when she realizes she has been a victim of a crime. She assists him in remaining hidden in plain sight by convincing others that he is Calvin. A tenuous friendship develops between the two of them. However, practically every candid moment is overshadowed by their diametrically opposed personality. When they do manage to get along, amazing things happen. They go on a spacewalk together, and Sophie enjoys the time of her life, despite her reservations. When they get on Mars, Walt is arrested, while Sophie is reunited with Calvin and his family.

Do Walt and Sophie End Up Together in Moonshot?

Yes, Walt and Sophie end up together, but only after a period of disillusionment. Ginny drops by, stating that she grew concerned after learning that he has decided to pursue her after only one meeting. She also introduces Walt to her boyfriend, the guard who escorted her into the facility where Walt is being held. As she walks away, Ginny assures Walt that he is now with his true love: Mars. What she doesn’t realize is that this particular remark is no longer correct.

Walt realizes he wasn’t deceiving anyone when he tried to get into the ship. Leon Kovi and his staff were aware of it, but they determined that Walt posed no danger to the people who had paid for the trip and allowed him to stay. Kovi then uploaded the video to the internet, where it quickly became viral. While the board members of Kovi’s company want him to return Walt, going against their wishes brings Kovi a special kind of delight. As a result, Walt gets to stay on Mars.

In other news, Sophie discovers that some of the things Walt told her about her and Calvin’s relationship are uncomfortably true. Their objective was to stay on Earth and clean it up. And now she’s on Mars, millions of miles from her dreams. Furthermore, Calvin informs her that he has suggested her for a position on his research team without even consulting her. Sophie takes her decision and ends her relationship with Calvin after speaking with Calvin’s mother Jan, who has taken on the role of a mother for her since her parents’ deaths.

For a long time, Mars has served as a source of inspiration, an ideal destination for adventures, a beacon of hope for the future, and so on. If Walt had been born 600 years earlier, he would have stolen a boat and just sailed away, as he tells Ginny. He was born with an adventurous spirit. Mars provides the answer to all of life’s fundamental problems, as well as the remedy to all of his restlessness. However, he places the idea of life on Mars on such a high pedestal that it was always doomed to fail. He gradually discovers that the bleak planet is not what he had dreamed for.

Walt decides to return to Earth after declining Kovi’s offer to go to Ceres and learning that Sophie is aboard the return shuttle.
