Aadavallu Meeku Johaarlu is a 2022 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Tirumala Kishore. Produced by SLV Cinemas, the film stars Rashmika Mandanna, Khushbu Sundar, Raadhika Sarathkumar, Urvashi, and Sharwanand.

Tirumala initially planned the film in 2016 with Venkatesh and Nithya Menen as the leads but it did not materialize. The project was revived in October 2020 with Sharwanand and Mandanna replacing them. Principal photography of the film commenced in July 2021 and ended in February 2022 with the filming primarily taking place in Hyderabad and Rajahmundry. The film’s score and soundtrack are composed by Devi Sri Prasad. Sujith Sarang and A. Sreekar Prasad performed the cinematography and editing respectively. Aadavallu Meeku Johaarlu was released on 4 March 2022 and opened to mixed reviews from critics.

Aadavaallu Meeku Johaarlu Movie Review

On paper, Kishore Tirumala’s Aadavallu Meeku Johaarlu (AMJ) appears to be a fantastic film. The leads are a sensitive man and an independent lady, shattering stereotypes that are all too common in Tollywood. There are comedians in the universe who exist solely for the purpose of amusement; there is nothing wrong with that. Families governed by women who know what they’re doing are acceptable. Despite having such a fantastic scope at his disposal, the director ends up crafting a film that is only adequate at best.

Chiranjeevi, also known as Chiru (Sharwanand), is the centre of attention. He was raised by five women, including his mother (Radhika) and aunt (Kavitha Ranjini). There are males in this family, the spouses, but they are unimportant in the grand scheme of things because it is the women who make decisions in this family. Decisions such as who Chiru should marry, because no girl ever seems to be good enough for him. Aadhya (Rashmika Mandanna) meets this strange family and seems to fit right in. But there’s one major snag: her single mother (Khusbu), who is also an independent woman, does not want her to marry.

Chiru, we’re told, has a kalyana mandapam. We’re told it’s ironic given his unmarried status. Aadhya is a lawyer, although her occupation has nothing to do with this storey. This storey is set in Rajahmundry, which has nothing to do with the overall plot. We don’t know what Chiru’s mother and aunts do, but Aadhya’s mother has her own small-scale factory, which she operates with the help of Jhansi. We never learn why Chiru lives in a household governed by domineering women, where men are treated as a ‘backdrop,’ and by the time we learn why Aadhya’s mother is the way she is, it comes as no surprise, because the film is plagued with clichés. The only thing that is slightly new in the picture is that Chiru is not toxically masculine and that Aadhya has other things to do besides fawn over him.

After a certain point in the film, you wonder if AMJ will ever bring up the topic of how minors, especially legal adults, should be allowed to make their own judgments, for better or worse. Especially when side stories show said children deciding who to marry and dealing with the realities of marriage life. That debate, however, is never brought up. Instead, the film appears to be attempting to convey the concept that a “good child” is only one who thinks of their parents first and everyone else, including their lover, later. Snore! Not exactly ground-breaking messaging. It’s interesting since later in the storey, a man is judged for not blessing his child.

Leaving that aside, the film contains some amusing moments, due to Brahmanandam, Vennela Kishore, Satya, and others, who manage to keep things light even as the melodrama reaches its climax. Sharwanand and Rashmika Mandanna are delightful — they’re the sole reason you’ll see the movie. They’re both naturals in their roles, and Rashmika is stunning. However, there is no chemistry between the primary couple, and you have to question what they see in each other to justify everything they go through. Radhika, Khusbu, and Kavitha are stuck in roles that don’t give them much room to shine — they breeze through it. Devi Sri Prasad’s music isn’t particularly noteworthy; it’s neither bad nor good.

Aadavallu Meeku Johaarlu has relatable moments, but the storyline is so shallow that it doesn’t justify the film’s brief runtime. If only the film had a unique storey to convey.
