The third season of Netflix’s Mexican crime thriller ‘Who Killed Sara?’ (original title: ‘Quién mató a Sara?’) concludes the long-running eponymous mystery. The stakes have never been higher, and for a brief time, Sara appears to be alive! The tables have also been turned on the vainglorious Lazcano family, who are now bankrupt and more fractured than ever. Then there’s the enigmatic Reinaldo (Jean Reno), a previously undisclosed component of the puzzle. There’s a lot that happens in the last season of ‘Who Killed Sara,’ so let’s untangle everyone’s destiny and see who ends up where. SPOILERS FOLLOW.

Recap of Who Killed Sara Season 3

Season 3 begins with the excavation of Sara’s burial, revealing an empty casket. As a stunned audience looks on, the police inspector reveals that the case has been changed from a murder inquiry to a missing person’s case. Alex then receives an unexplained phone call informing him that Sara’s childhood friend Marifer, who was assumed to have died in a fire in season 2, is still alive. Marifer, who is on the verge of dying from significant burn injuries, tells Alex that Sara’s psychiatrist Dr. Alanis and their old buddy Nicandro are to blame for his sister’s death.

Season 3 also highlights the Lazcano family’s changed fortunes. The family loses everything after Elisa sets fire to the casino and César Lazcano’s illegal operations are revealed. César flees to Seychelles with what little money they have left, but is compelled to return after Alex cleans out his bank accounts. Meanwhile, José Mara (Chema) is imprisoned, where an unfortunate experience causes him to reconsider his sexuality.

Alex discovers that Sara survived the parachute crash and was confined at a secret facility where she gave birth to a daughter. César’s old friend Reinaldo is the mastermind behind the complex conspiracy to kidnap Sara while pretending she’s dead.

Through flashbacks, it is revealed that Reinaldo, Nicandro’s father, has a perverted notion of curing homosexuality and schizophrenia. He subjected Sara to cruel tests and imprisoned his own daughter, Daniela, for many years due to her sexual orientation. Reinaldo’s company is known as Project Medusa.

Is Sara Dead or Alive in Who Killed Sara Season 3?

Sara’s daughter Lucia escapes Reinaldo’s facility temporarily and meets Alex for the first time before being kidnapped by the deadly scientist and his crew. Alex finally decides to launch an all-out assault on the Medusa facility, armed to the teeth. He saves Lucia and runs into Reinaldo, whom he kills. However, he discovers that Sara died shortly after giving birth to her daughter.

During the attack on Medusa, Rodolfo is shot and killed. César finally confesses to his misdeeds, including the shooting of Sara’s father, Abel Martinez, and is arrested. Alex discovers Sara’s grave behind the medical facility and informs the authorities. The show concludes with Alex, Elisa, Chema, and Lucia seeing together as the cops begin excavating a massive graveyard behind the Medusa plant.

For much of Season 3, Sara appears to be alive, and the thought of her ultimately being reunited with Alex becomes more realistic. In actuality, the season begins with Sara’s grave being discovered to be empty. The brave brother even raids the fortified Medusa facility in search of his sister (and her daughter), but without success. When Alex finally confronts Reinaldo, the latter delivers the tragic conclusion to Sara’s narrative. She is tortured for years in the Medusa facility while Reinaldo seeks to develop a medicine for schizophrenia. Sara’s newborn child is similarly taken away from her right away and utilized in additional trials.

Sara eventually realizes that escape is impossible and concludes that the only way she can punish her nasty captor is to kill herself, so impeding his studies. Sara is fatally stabbed with a knife in the last seconds of the season, while Reinaldo looks on in horror.

We next see Alex standing in front of a modest cemetery with Sara’s name on it, confirming that the show’s namesake is indeed deceased. However, contrary to popular belief, Sara does not die as a result of the parachute accident, but rather dies shortly after giving birth to her daughter.

What Befalls the Lazcanos?

The Lazcano family is inextricably linked to Sara’s case and is the first target of Alex’s retribution scheme. In actuality, Sara’s frighteningly resourceful brother succeeds in causing major damage to the family’s reputation in season 1. The Lazcanos are irrevocably damaged by season 2, when Elisa Lazcano burns down her own family’s casino.

As a result, season 3 begins with the once-wealthy family now bankrupt and their assets and properties seized by the government. César and Mariana’s bond, which has kept the family together for better or worse, utterly fails. The husband is eventually condemned to forty years in prison, while the wife lives a life of penance. Chema has been released from prison, but he still appears to be struggling with his sexuality.

César bequeaths all of his remaining riches to Alex before being arrested, suggesting that he share it among the Lazcano siblings.

Interestingly, because Lucia’s biological father is César, the Lazcano family gains a member through Sara’s daughter. However, Rodolfo is shot near the end of the season, so they also lose a member.

Is Reinaldo still alive?

Reinaldo is not just the antagonist of the last season, but also the villain of the entire plot of the show. Season 3 reveals the surprisingly sophisticated scheme devised by the evil scientist in order to obtain Sara as a test subject. He then tortures her with electrical therapy and appears to perform brain surgery on the young mother. Reinaldo does not even spare his own children, imprisoning his daughter in the Medusa facility for years.

All of this indicates to Reinaldo having a tumultuous ending, which is exactly what happens. Alex eventually binds Reinaldo to his own sadistic equipment and electrocutes him until he is visibly dead. A massive graveyard is later uncovered behind his facility, revealing hundreds of victims who were presumably tortured to death under the pretence of developing a treatment for schizophrenia and homosexuality.
