The Afterparty Episode 4 Recap and Ending Explained

Chelsea (Ilana Glazer) is hauled in by an increasingly agitated Detective Danner in Episode 4 of ‘The Afterparty,’ bringing us probably one of the most enigmatic characters ever (Tiffany Haddish). Chelsea is the odd one out, having appeared to wander around inebriated for the whole of the party. However, with her flask discovered near to Xavier’s (Dave Franco) dead body, she becomes the major suspect in the crime.

The episode is very illuminating, as Chelsea is revealed to be a swarm of secrets and vengeance plans, as expected. For a while, it appears that she intends to murder Xavier. Chelsea, did you do it? And who is the enigmatic figure that is threatening her? Let’s have a look at ‘The Afterparty’ episode 4 and see what we can unearth. WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD.

Recap of Episode 4 of The Afterparty

The episode begins with a quick hunt for Jennifer #2, who hasn’t been seen in a long time. Danner then summons Chelsea for questioning, and the spikey class pariah tells an exaggeratedly dramatic story. As it turns out, she blames Xavier for all of her terrible decisions since high school, claiming it all started with an as-yet-unknown occurrence at their senior year’s St. Patrick’s Day party.

Despite Danner’s prodding, Chelsea does not comment on what happened at the party. She does, however, start to tell how she intended to exact revenge on Xavier for what he did all those years ago. Chelsea’s attempt to sedate Xavier with cat tranquilizers and snap compromising photos of him is revealed as an incredulous detective listens (to be later leaked to the press).

As the story progresses, we learn about her affair with Brett, which she deeply regrets, and about a mysterious person who keeps sending her frightening notes. She also admits to dosing Aniq with cat tranquilizers. Unbeknownst to Danner or Chelsea, Aniq is lurking in the adjacent room, listening in on their talk.

Afterparty Episode 4: Did Chelsea Murder Xavier?

As Chelsea’s story progresses, we (and Danner) learn that, despite Xavier’s best efforts to avoid her, his bitter ex-classmate was adamant that her plot succeed. In the flashback, she is cornering Xavier after following him up to his room. She hands him the flask with the cat tranquilizers but then changes her mind and confesses her plan to him, to which Xavier (in true form) responds that he’s already leaked compromising images of himself to the press.

Chelsea, feeling confident, then goes down to apologize to Zoe, Brett’s wife during his affair with the former. The two ladies quickly become friends, finding common ground in ridiculing Brett’s dismal sexual performance, which they compare to being on a construction site. Back in the present, Chelsea concludes her story but inadvertently reveals Aniq when Danner presses her about the St. Patrick’s Day celebration. As the episode comes to a close, Aniq, facial drawings and all, begins to fear as the detective and her deputy begin to search for him.

As a result, Chelsea’s complex story finally comes to light, and it becomes evident that she did not murder Xavier. Is that correct? We know for certain that Chelsea decides not to carry out her plan after witnessing the celebrity’s poor apology song (which she forces him to sing). She does, however, appear to leave the flask containing tranquilizers (denoted by a red “X”) with him, instructing him to empty the contents down the sink. Despite knowing what it contains, Xavier almost takes a taste from the flask before Chelsea intervenes.

He may have made the same careless gesture after Chelsea left the room, inadvertently drinking the powerful sedatives and tumbling off his balcony. The emotive remarks she used to chastise him also seemed to have put the typically superficial and exuberant celebrity in a reflective mood, increasing the likelihood that he took an unintentional sip. As a result, we can be assured that Chelsea did not intend to murder Xavier. She could, however, have killed him with her hipflask filled of cat tranquilizers.

What Happened During Senior Year’s St. Patrick’s Day Party? What is Chelsea’s motivation for seeking vengeance?

The tragic St. Patrick’s Day party in their senior year is a critical piece of the puzzle, at least for Chelsea’s (and potentially Aniq’s) story. Though Chelsea refuses to tell the investigator about the events, claiming she is attempting to move on, we do get a few suggestions about what may have happened. We know right away that Xavier was the one who triggered the traumatic occurrence. The fact that the celebrity tries to hastily make up with Chelsea at the reunion and then spends the evening avoiding her demonstrates that he, too, recalls and feels bad for what he did.

Aniq is also a part of the mystery chain of events, as evidenced by his accusation of Xavier of pranking him “again” after waking up from the affects of Chelsea’s cat tranquilizers during the afterparty. Detective Danner notices the term “again” and appears to believe that Aniq was most likely pranked by Xavier at the fatal party, which is why he blames the celebrity when he wakes up with his pants around his ankles and marker drawings on his face.

Despite the fact that we know very little about what happened at that gathering, we do know that whatever happened was critical. It appears to have caused Chelsea’s life to crumble (thus her desire for vengeance), and now it appears that Aniq is also somehow connected in what happened all those years ago.

Of course, it’s becoming evident that the majority of the guests had some sort of personal grievance towards Xavier, providing them with motivation. However, this particular incident seems to reverberate even with the normally oblivious superstar (since we see Xavier feel guilty about it), making it significant and also likely that the events of the St. Patrick’s Day party will be exposed further.
