According to the archives, the CRP financed this operation in order to obtain photographed copies of Democratic campaign documents and to place wiretaps. However, it was ultimately unsuccessful and five burglars were arrested.

The Nixon administration tries to hide its involvement in this affair, but fails. The burglars are charged for their part in the conspiracy, along with Mitchell and others, and Nixon is forced to resign as President of the United States of America.

According to the series creator, the show puts an extra emphasis on ambition and complicity and how they are often linked. Gaslit also deals with two marriages. The relationship between former White House adviser Dean and his wife Mo survived the ordeal, while Martha and John separated in 1973.

The last years of Martha’s life were very difficult. According to reports, she had no friends because of Watergate, no money, and was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Martha died on May 31, 1976.
