Sarkaru Vaari Paata Movie Review
Geetha Govindam, Parasuram Petla’s previous film, was a huge hit but seemed to lack understanding of the concept of consent. Sarkaru Vaari Paata, his latest mass entertainer, oscillates between being a commercial film where anything goes and a film that strives far too hard to elicit sympathy for some of the minor characters.
Mahi (Mahesh Babu), a debt collector and money lender, has a tragic backstory. Despite his difficult past, he has formed his own finance firm in the United States. While he’s typically laid-back, he’s also prone to following those who owe him money from anywhere in the world, regardless of the amount. When he meets Kalaavathi, he puts his stalking abilities to good use (Keerthy Suresh).
She arrives into his life wearing a beautiful saree, flowers in her hair, and books in her hand, seeming to be anything other than the gambling addict she is. While his friend Kishore (Vennela Kishore) can spot the red lights she emits from a mile away, Mahi is too in love to notice any of them, and she finds it simple to dupe him. When reality sets in, he has no choice but to travel to Vizag to collect the amount she owes her father, a politician and businessman named Rajendranath (Samuthirakani). But Rajendranath and Kalavaathi are unaware that Mahi has another plan.
When it comes to the tone of the picture, Sarkaru Vaari Paata suffers from a lack of focus. Yes, we know that’s how commercial cinema works – a little bit of everything – but what happens when none of those tracks appear to live up to their full potential? Apart from Kishore’s persona, Mahi and Kalaavathi’s love story generates some genuine laughs in the early half of the film, while an action sequence involving a lorry in the second half generates some inadvertent comedy.
Mahi’s adoration quickly turns to harassment, as she alternates between overturning boats and interacting with strangers at airports. While this is all well and good, he also thinks it acceptable to smack people (including Keerthy and Brahmaji) and to infantilize his ostensible lover. Parasuram similarly uses a physically challenged individual to gain sympathy. The VFX and green screen work might have been much better.
A societal message underpins the film. What begins as a love story quickly devolves into a needless ego clash between two men, snowballing into a mini-revolution against the banking system, nay exploitation. While the messaging chosen by Param is genuine and even topical, he makes the unusual choice of ‘tell and not show,’ with Mahesh giving extensive dialogues. These story points deserve more screen time than they get. It’s nice that the protagonist wants the antagonist to learn a lesson and become a part of the solution rather than simply dying.
Where the film succeeds is in Mahesh and Keerthy’s performances. The former appears far more calm, and in character, he makes even the stupidest of talks seem understandable – at least for the time being. Keerthy’s character enters and exits the story as needed, but she does an excellent job of playing her eccentric role. The film’s soundtrack by Thaman may not be for everyone, yet the songs do not stick out like a sore thumb. His BGM, in particular, contributes significantly to the tale. Samuthirakani, like the rest of the actors, can play this role in his sleep, as can Nadhiya and Tanikella Bharani, whose portrayals are one-note. A few parts of the film keep you interested, but others do not.
Sarkaru Vaari Paata is ultimately a half-baked commercial movie that you can sit through owing to Mahesh and Keerthy’s performances. If you’ve missed seeing a bulkier Mahesh on-screen, check it out. Just don’t go in with high expectations.
