Runway 34 Movie Review
Runway 34 is loosely based on the story of a flight from Doha to Kochi that just missed disaster owing to poor visibility and terrible weather a few years ago. Captain Vikrant Khanna (Ajay Devgn, who also serves as director and producer) is a high-flying pilot who is confident and borderline arrogant about his talents, particularly in dealing with turbulence and crises 35000 feet above sea level. He works for an airline company.
On what appears to be a regular trip from Dubai to Cochin, he experiences severe weather. Much to the chagrin of his first officer Tanya Alburqurque (Rakul Preet Singh), he not only changes the flight’s alternate destination, but also sends out the ‘May Day’ warning shortly before landing, barely inches from a crash. The outcome of the probe plays a significant role in the story.
Despite precedents in Hollywood such as Sully and Flight, Ajay Devgn’s directing is a first in many aspects for Hindi cinema, and a distinct and pleasant difference from his prior attempts to helm the megaphone. His development as a storyteller is undeniable. The cutting-edge visual treatment of the narrative, a crisp story (Sandeep Kewlani) and screenplay (Sandeep and Aamil Keeyan Khan) with no unnecessary romantic and dramatic digressions or interludes, smart use of VFX, moments of thrill that bring one to the first half’s conclusion, the film’s sound and production design are just some of the film’s undeniable plus points.
Even though it has a duration of roughly two hours and 28 minutes, it doesn’t feel that long, and it is equally entertaining in the thrill and drama sectors. Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani, and Ajay’s performances are well-composed and on-point with their characters. The music intermingled with the story adds to the proceedings as well.
The trial-led second half, on the other hand, could have used a little more drama and depth. To begin, even as the screenplay proceeds to closely analyze whether it was the weather or the pilot’s mindspace that led to the ‘MayDay’ call, it fails to answer a few critical questions. One of these is why, despite being encouraged by his first officer, the pilot elected not to divert to the flight’s specified secondary destination. And why was this aspect not pushed hard enough during a closed-door trial?
Smaller supporting characters, such as the aviation journalist, the enraged businessman, and the guy capturing films on his phone during the trip, seemed to serve a greater function in the trial sections. Unfortunately, they did not. Also, while Boman Irani makes an appearance, he doesn’t have much room to shine. Rakul plays her part with complete honesty, achieving a fine balance between a range of emotions, but her role should have been fleshed out a little further. Angira Dhar and Aakanksha Singh could have used bigger roles and contributed more to the story.
Runway 34, on the other hand, should be seen for the way it presents one of the deadliest and near-disastrous aviation mishaps in recent history with compelling characters, thrill, and drama. Although there have been films shot in huge and tiny sections inside aircrafts, this one plays masterfully on the audience’s psychology by showing them exactly what may go wrong if the weather does not allow a flight’s landing and when judgments must be made against the clock. Overall, the picture doesn’t waste time taxiing on the runway; it takes flight quickly and keeps you fascinated until you exit the theater aisles.
