Puzhu Movie Summary

Kuttan is a police officer and widower who lives in an apartment with his son, Kichu, from a higher socioeconomic class group. Kichu, who wishes his father died, is suffocated by his overprotective temperament and domineering techniques. Kuttan begins to suspect that someone is attempting to murder him and becomes distrustful of everyone. His fear is heightened when his younger sister, Bharati, and her theatrical artist husband, Kuttappan, visit him in a neighboring flat. Kuttan has a complicated relationship with Bharati because she eloped with Kuttappan, a minority class member. Kuttan’s intolerance towards minorities leads to the deaths of Kuttappan and Bharathi.

Puzhu Movie Review

Kuttan, a former cop, is battling personal and professional demons. Will he be able to reconcile his differences?

Watching Mammootty is half the fun of rookie director Ratheena’s Puzhu. Vidheyan comes to mind, with the actor discarding his celebrity, heroic persona to reveal a villainy festering deep within. After thirty years and countless ‘larger-than-life’ characters, Mammootty is still able to bring startling nuances to his role as Kuttan, and you realize why he is still at the top of his game.

Kuttan, a widower with a young boy whom he raises with a combination of stern parenting and tough affection, is a former cop with clear grey shades. His estranged sister, Parvathy, moves in with her thespian husband Kuttapan to his apartment complex. Kuttan, who is already troubled by the idea that former police officers are trying to kill him, is made even more nervous by the fact that his sister and her lower caste husband live in the same building. Add to that dubious business dealings and his kid, who is worried by Kuttan’s slightly psychotic strictness, and the scene becomes tense. The plot hinges on Kuttan’s ability to reconcile these damaged connections.

The tension propels the plot forward. Harshad, Sharfu, and Suhas’ script is never exactly clear about what it wants to communicate. Caste and politics are clearly important themes, but the messages are understated – Kuttapan is a prime example of this – even at the end, when things become more action-packed.

Mammootty instills a sense of danger in his persona that is both frightening and unsettling because of how softly he accomplishes it. Is he a horrible person? Is he any good? Is he insane? We’re never quite sure, thanks to a combination of terrific direction, scripting, and acting. Even though the picture moves slowly, it is always riveting.

Parvathy is that fantastic chameleon performer who physically transforms into the character she is playing. It’s a minor role, but she demonstrates her great acting talents by her fear around her older brother and her relaxed affection for her difficult spouse. Appuni Sasi is likewise excellent in his minor role as Kuttapan. Jakes Bejoy’s music lends the proper atmospheric tempo to the situations; without it, the suspense doesn’t feel nearly the same.

Puzhu is a must-see for Mammootty fans, but it’s also worth a look for everyone else.
