Lalitham Sundaram (transl. Simple is beautiful) is a Malayalam-language comedy-drama film directed by Madhu Warrier in his directorial debut. The film stars Biju Menon, Manju Warrier, Saiju Kurup, Deepti Sati and Anu Mohan. Manju Warrier co-produced the film with Kochumon under the banner Manju Warrier Productions.

Lalitham Sundaram Movie Review

We sometimes want to unwind with a simple, feel-good family story that we can relate to and that serves as a mirror to our own life. Madhu Wariar, making his directorial debut with Lalitham Sundaram, tries this and succeeds as well as falls short.

Annie, Sunny, and Jerry take a break from their hectic lives to see their aging father at their parental home in the hills, motivated by a video message from their late mother. The siblings’ relationship is barely clean on the surface, and at the first sign of conflict or difficulties, they rush back to their work and city life.

Annie (Manju Warrier), a corporate CEO with two children and a caring stay-at-home spouse (Saiju Kurup), is a workaholic even on vacation. Sunny (Biju Menon) had recently suffered a major loss in his event management firm, and he was visiting without his wife (Ramya Nambeesan). Jerry (Anu Mohan), an IT guy, is there with his live-in divorcee lover (Deepti Sati). Aside from the 80s-style picnics and niceties, the novel dives into what has created the troubles in their relationship and causes them to look inwardly to recognize that things are not always as they appear and that they may be in the wrong themselves.

The problem with Pramod Mohan’s Lalitham Sundaram is that it feels too basic and old-fashioned, especially given the hill station setting. It’s a family drama, but it’s not exciting enough to keep us interested.

Saiju Kurup is developing into such a strong performer that, even in this minor role, he almost steals the show from superb actors like Manju Warrier and Biju Menon, who appears more depressed than usual. Anu Mohan is excellent in the role of their younger brother. Deepti Sati is excellent in her supporting role, while Sudheesh expertly gives lovability and heartbreaking knowledge to a character who could have been a cliche.

Madhu Wariar appears to be playing it safe by directing a simple story like this, but he does a solid job, so it would be nice to see him do something a little more bold or experimental in his next.

For the time being, Lalitham Sundaram is a pleasant enough film for the entire family to enjoy, which may stimulate some self-reflection.
