Kathir Movie Review

While some directors have been cranking out mindless entertainers with established stars, a few others are still attempting to write stories that allow the audience to take something away with them. Kathir belongs to the second group. It’s not a terrific picture, but the world that the director creates around two characters is rather inspiring and achieves its purpose. Kathir centres around two characters: a young man who has experienced numerous disappointments and an elderly woman with an amazing past. It’s about their lovely friendship and how the young man’s life changes after learning the narrative of the elder woman.

Though Dhinesh Palanivel’s plot is straightforward, the settings he presents here transport us together with the protagonist. Kathir (Venkatesh Annadurai), a disgruntled engineering graduate, leaves his hometown following a disagreement with his father in quest of work in Chennai. His inability to communicate in English becomes a hurdle to obtaining a job in the IT field. During this period, he meets his housekeeper Savithri (Rajini Chandy), an elderly woman with an inspiring personality. Though Kathir’s careless behavior irritates Savithri, they develop a great bond over time. Kathir tells her about his college love story and how life has always been unjust to him.

After learning of the tragic death of his close buddy Farooq and Savithri’s inspiring history, his life takes a turn. It drives him to stay in his hometown of Coimbatore and create a world that is valuable not just to him but also to others.

Dhinesh Palanivel’s concept of telling a story with simple emotions is admirable, and it effectively transports us into the world of his characters without straining too much. Throughout, the plot is fairly interesting and engaging. However, if Dhinesh had been able to write the screenplay in a non-linear fashion, the film would have been much better. Kathir will not disappoint those who came to see a decent tale, but it may struggle to satisfy a bigger portion of the audience. When we expect Kathir’s backstory to be engaging and strong, all we get is a typical break-up story. Even so, the director manages to include some wonderful scenes from Kathir’s undergraduate days, and the cause for the breakup works without being unprofessional. However, the second half is far more compelling, thanks to Savithri’s flashback segment.

Santhosh Pratap is portrayed as a communist and revolutionist who fights for the rights of farmers and disadvantaged communities. His segments are fascinating, and they could have been produced into a distinct film. However, this is also an issue with the picture; we get three unique stories in one film, which may have been developed into a longer feature. The mood changes, which distracts the audience.

The picture is otherwise well-intended, and the climax is very convincing. The performances of the lead actors are the film’s key attractions. Venkatesh and Rajini Chandy have both done an excellent job of portraying their personalities in a genuine manner.

Bhavya Trikha, who plays Venkatesh’s girlfriend, has also performed admirably. Santhosh Pratap appears in the film for only a few minutes, yet his performance is powerful and intriguing. Prashant Pillai’s background score and music lifted a few passages that would have otherwise been ordinary. Except for a few continuity errors, the technical crew did a good job. Overall, Kathir is a good film to watch if you want to take anything unforgettable away from it.
