Jo and Jo Movie Summary

Jomol is Baby and Lilly’s eldest child. Jomon is their second kid, and Jomol believes her parents adore him more because he is a boy. When it comes to the power struggle between him and his sister, Jomon is a carefree person who retains certain chauvinistic views. Jomol, with her great perception, notices Jomon’s every misbehavior and reports it to their parents. All of these things cause a schism between them. Meanwhile, a love letter comes at their residence, and they each believe it was intended for the other person, and they both try to piece together the complete tale behind the letter using evidence, which makes the story. Parallel plotlines include Manoj’s crush on his friend’s sister Jomol, Eby’s preparations to meet his classmate and common law partner Nimmy during COVID-19’s second phase, and so on.

Petty squabbles among family members in one’s own home may not seem like a huge concern until they occur in another home. And many of those have occurred in the previous two years, alongside the more serious ones. In his debut picture, Jo and Jo, director Arun D Jose focuses on the former. Even when things grow serious in his film, one should not be concerned. Although I thought the trailer was strong, I approached Jo and Jo with some caution. I anticipated it to be another ‘friendship’ picture that recycled notions we’d seen before in other films. Yes, the latter is true of Jo and Jo, but the film isn’t unremarkable.

The backdrop is a regular lower-middle-class family, with characters who look like your neighbors. The main characters are Johny Antony as the father and Sminu Sijo as the mother. Nikhila Vimal is a daughter, while Mathew Thomas is a son. Jomol, the daughter, takes tuition to keep herself occupied and to supplement her income. Jomon, the son, is a slacker at home who occasionally goes out with his friends (Naslen K Gafoor and Melvin G Babu). The lockdown has begun. These bored boys are looking for ways to keep their sanity.

Anyone who has spent a significant portion of their youth with their parents and siblings will recognize the frustration of being under their’surveillance.’ It is not simple. One is astounded at Arun D Jose and co-writer Raveesh Nath’s ability to extract many gags (not necessarily of the laugh-out-loud sort) from such ordinary situations. Of course, I won’t ruin the jokes that worked for me.

However, Jo & Jo works even when the jokes are separated. The laid-back conversation amongst such naturally skilled actors as Naslen, Mathew, and Melvin is a joy to watch. Having an NRI ‘parishkari’ persona around adds to the hilarity (Sagar Surya). These performers do not reprise their roles from Thanneer Mathan Dinangal, yet Jo and Jo has a similar feel to that film. The best analogy, in my opinion, is the 1995 film Friday, starring Chris Tucker and Ice Cube. After losing his job, Cube hangs out at his parents’ house and gets into mischief with Tucker and a slew of other amusingly eccentric characters.

In my opinion, Nikhila delivers not only the best performance of her career, but also an exceptionally clever, fierce, and naughty performance. The ‘espionage’ efforts of Jomol and her competitor brother provide some of the best scenes in the film. I especially liked the scene in which Naslen claims to know how to hack WhatsApp and then does something that might make you spill your popcorn. Johny Antony and Sminu Sijo play the type of parents you can be upset with today and forgive tomorrow. Talk about a fun night at the movies.
