Beast Movie Review

Director Nelson’s previous films, Kolamaavu Kokila and Doctor, drew humour from situations that would not have come across as hilarious on paper. In Beast, he also attempts to make a serious scenario – a hostage crisis – humorous. But he fails miserably this time. In fact, the picture hardly delivers chuckles where they should have been delivered and makes us laugh whenever it attempts to be a mass-hero film.
The picture gets off to a good start. A prologue introduces Veera Raghavan (Vijay), a top RAW officer who becomes psychologically wounded after a mission to apprehend a wanted terror mastermind (Liliput Faruqui). He leaves the organization and is attempting to exorcise his demons when the mall where he is with his girlfriend Preethi (Pooja Hegde, whose only role is to be eye candy) is overrun by terrorists. Althaf Hussain, the government’s negotiator (a wry Selvaraghavan making his acting debut), manages to persuade Veera to join the rescue effort, but will he succeed?

The issue with Beast is that it has a protagonist that is far too powerful for a mission that never appears to present a challenge. The terrorists don’t appear to be hazardous (they barely murder anyone, even when trying to instill fear in the minds of the hostages), and the mission doesn’t appear to be a difficult task for a daredevil like Veera. None of the hijackers, including their commander Saif, had any personality (Ankur Ajit Vikal). “Innum konjam difficult kuduthurukalam,” Veera says Saif near the end of the film, highlighting how weak the antagonist is.

Nelson, like in Doctor, gives his protagonist a slew of oddballs with whom he must collaborate to bring down the terrorists, but unlike in that picture, the characters here don’t have enough screen time or motivation to be distinctive. Only VTV Ganesh manages to create a few laughs, while the Yogi Babu and Redin Kingsley act becomes boring after a while. Even the last film’s inept mobster team, Mahali and Kili, fail to impress this time.

In direct contrast to Doctor, in which such characters worked together as a team even during battle scenes (such as the memorable one on the Metro), Vijay does everything, with the others existing primarily to offer a joke or two. Women, in particular, are completely marginalized. Surprisingly, Nelson devotes more screen time to two annoying characters: an elderly lady (Subbalakshmi) who is one of the captives in the mall, and a union minister (Shaji) who has a personal motivation to be a part of the rescue mission.

Anirudh attempts to inject some punch into the situations with his score, but by the end, with writing that is just leaner and never meaner or stronger, even that fails. Nelson appears to have relied only on his star to carry the film this time, but with a script that doesn’t give him much to work with, even Vijay can only do so much with his star power.
