Ayngaran Movie Review

Regardless of its technical deficiencies, a film with a subject that touches on human emotions always works. When an innocent life is at stake in the story, we tend to sympathize with and forgive the makers’ mistakes. Ayngaran is one such film, and it carries a strong social message about the government’s inability to recognize creativity and innovation in the country.

Despite the fact that the film’s core plot has been done to death in Tamil cinema, Ayngaran works in portions. It tells the story of a dedicated mechanical engineer who creates a machine that not only saves the life of an innocent child but also uncovers a mystery theft case.

Mathi (GV Prakash), a mechanical engineering graduate, opens the film by attempting to market one of his inventions. However, the person he approaches rejects the project, claiming that the invention is useless. Rejection follows him wherever he goes, and Mahima Nambiar, his love interest, is the sole bright spot in his life. As time passes, Mathi enters a chicken farm with his friend Kaali Venkat and uncovers odd activity taking place there. He captures it and spreads it virally, which affects Magudi, the farm’s owner and a powerful businessman.

A parallel scheme involves a band of six persons from the north committing a massive diamond theft in the metropolis. Mathi comes across this group by happenstance while trying to avoid Magudi. Meanwhile, we see that a four-year-old girl has fallen into a borewell pit on private land, which has caused quite a stir. The story’s arc is completed by how it relates to Mathi’s life and how his innovation resolves all difficulties.

Though the introductory sequences and scene organization appear hazy at first, Ayngaran really takes off around thirty minutes. Every character is well-written, and the non-linear story-telling style in the second half is interesting. For example, the film’s director, Ravi Arasu, presents us to a circumstance (breaking news of a boy stuck in a borewell pit) and then takes us on a trip, demonstrating how all of the people played a role in getting to the predicament.

Certain commercial components, such as the romance parts, felt pushed into the narrative and could have been avoided in such a raw subject.
In the second half, all of the characters receive sufficient closure, making the film more convincing. The protagonist’s fights with all of his adversaries are also well-crafted.

Though Nayanthara’s 2017 film Aramm deals with the same social issue, it should be emphasized that this film was written long before Aramm.

GV Prakash’s performance is mature and good. He is ideal for the part. The stunt choreographers make the stunts look realistic. One of the film’s highlights is the use of slow motion shots during action situations. Haresh Peradi, who portrays a lustful and greedy inspector who clashes with Mathi’s father (Aadukalam Naren), and Siddhartha Shankar, who plays the leader of the criminal gang, perform admirably. Mahima Nambiar also gives a good performance.

Overall, Ayngaran is a film that speaks to a great subject, but it could have been done much better.
