Achcham Madam Naanam Payirppu Movie Review

Pavithra (Akshara Haasan), the protagonist of Achcham Madam Naanam Payirppu, appears to be a pushover who is bossed around by everyone at first. She dresses in the clothes that her mother (Malgudi Subha) has chosen for her. When her father (Suresh Menon) requests her to turn off the TV after one of his favorite batsmen had been dismissed, she does so. Despite the fact that her lover (Siddhartha Shankar) will bat next! She accepts candies from a nearby shop owner (George Maryan) just because he has been offering them to her for years. And she puts up with an intrusive ‘aunty’ (Janaki Sabesh) who comes into her house at random and insists on trying out new things.

But we also get to glimpse another side of her. Rathi (Anjana Jayaprakash) and Jessica (Anjana Jayaprakash) are her buddies (Shalini Vijayakumar). She appears to be herself while she’s with them, eating fish (despite coming from a Brahminical family) and discussing the possibility of having pre-marital sex with her cricketer boyfriend. The plot revolves around the last point. Will Pavithra opt to have sex with her boyfriend if she is forced to stay at home alone? They say ‘no’ and ‘yes’ in her ears, much like the good and wicked angels on either side of her shoulders.

Achcham Madam Naanam Payirppu is an unique female-centric Tamil film that places female desire at the forefront of the plot. It demonstrates that it is natural for a woman to be interested in sex and to discuss it. Nonetheless, despite its progressive aims, Achcham Madam Naanam Payirppu is a really lackluster film. The fundamental reason for this is that the proceedings are contrived. The dialogue is stilted (a scene between Pavithra and her grandmother (Usha Uthup), which should have landed an emotional punch, merely feels like a feel-good commercial), the performances don’t always ring true (while she certainly looks the part, Akshara frequently gives us the feeling that she’s acting a part rather than being it), and some scenes (will a girl trying to get laid risk going to her neighborhood shop to get a condom? Or open it even if no one is in the living room? Or maybe ask her beau to her house despite the fact that her downstairs neighbor (Kalairani) never leaves the porch?

But, happily, the film isn’t arrogant about the fact that it’s about women’s struggles. ‘Look how daring I am to show a woman getting waxed or having a wet dream!’ The tone is largely low-key (in a good manner), and the writer avoids the easy option of using comedy to depict its protagonist’s predicament.
