Aaraattu Movie Review

Neyyattinkara Gopan, a powerful ‘goon,’ is coming in to assist Edathala Mathai in the unlawful conversion of an 18-acre paddy field. Is he, however, who he claims to be?

Review: B Unnikrishnan and writer Udaykrishna have nailed a few features of the mass entertainer: Superstar, superstar speaking in a local dialect, fighting and more fights, various prominent actors even in tiny parts, big song and dance numbers, an appearance by AR Rahman, and a slew of cinematic references, particularly Mohanlal’s, that will pique spectators’ interest. But can’t a cheesy picture have a nice, rational story as well? Aaraattu suffers from this flaw.

Mohanlal plays Neyyattinkara Gopan, a powerful ‘goon’ tasked with resolving an illegal property dispute for Edathala Mathai (Vijayaraghavan), a wealthy landowner in Muthalakota. He wants to lower an ancient 18-acre paddy field in order to – who knows? – develop a community. But, of course, the RDO (Shraddha Srinath) and the locals oppose it because it is unlawful, and the village is making headway with producing organic vegetables in vacant fields thanks to the Muthalakotta Battalion, a group of four young men.

Neyyanttinkara Gopan has leased the property, and everyone knows it’s all part of Mathai’s plan to eventually level the area. So Gopan gets off to a bad start with everyone, but because to his charisma and simple resistance to Mathai and his hefty sons’ meanness, he quickly has practically all of the villagers and even the police eating out of his hands. But who is this Gopan, who considers AR Rahman a friend, and what is his true objective in Muthalakotta?

Director B Unnikrishnan has made every attempt to give the film mass appeal, therefore this is really a film that depends solely on Mohanlal’s shoulders. And the actor should be commended for retaining a youthful vitality and enthusiasm, despite some downright ridiculous portions; die-hard fans will be overjoyed.
Udaykrishna’s writing is inconsistent, and certain parts simply don’t go together. Furthermore, emphasizing political correctness does not make a character PC; authors must avoid stuff like the hero caressing his breast or singing provocative songs when a lady appears on screen. These things can no longer be deemed entertaining.

Also, what role did the subplots of Indrans, Riyaz Khan, and Nedumudi Venu have in the overall plot? They appear to have been added solely to accommodate more performers in the role… And, at times, it feels like an antique court, with so many people always circling Mohanlal.
Rahul Raj’s music is a combination of new and old songs, and because the old ones are well-known successes, they come across as more pleasurable. On the plus side, the BGM, which can often come across as over-the-top in such films, mixes in smoothly here. Special mention should be made to Vijay Ulaganath’s camerawork and Shameer Muhammed’s editing, both of which contribute to the film’s uplifting elements.

Aaraattu isn’t a particularly brilliant film, but if you’re looking for a’return to the theatre’ family amusement, it might suffice.
