Without meaning to be sexist, it is a reality that female nudity is more sought after in movies than male nudity. Some refer to it as female objectification, while others refer to it as artistic freedom.

Nudity is certainly one of the films’ strongest selling factors. However, only a few movies have succeeded in making nudity appear artistic rather than vulgar. From renowned Hollywood actresses to up-and-coming future stars, several have dared to show it all, despite no-nudity clauses in some of their contracts. Furthermore, the nudity is usually inferred or a body duplicate is used. Frontal nudity, on the other hand, necessitates greater tact. The use of prosthetics and body doubles has surely made filming nude sequences easier, which may be one of the reasons why we see more of the naked in movies nowadays.

Since the dawn of time, devoted moviegoers (particularly men) have sought for films and sequences in which the ladies are completely naked. Here is a selection of the best of them. This is by no means an exhaustive or best-to-worst list. It’s simply to give you a teeny-tiny idea that all of these extraordinary women braved to bare it all on screen in front of a film crew and yet were confident in giving a beautiful shot.

There’s something about strippers that really captivates males. It makes no sense logically to just sit there and watch girls go naked for you while you are not permitted to do anything. But watching the stunning Elizabeth Berkley undress, tease, and eventually get fully naked in front of a couple is a very different story. Though the film was a box office flop, it has now attained cult status, and her performance has been well praised.

 Betsy Rue (My Bloody Valentine 3D)

This slasher revival sells itself through sex and nudity. It’s your average teen camp party-turned-violent film. Betsy Rue, who is probably most remembered for this part, has a full-fledged sex scene as well as a couple of long shots of her fully naked as she chases after her boyfriend. Aside from the crassness, Rue looks unbelievably attractive and gives the film a much-needed watching opportunity.

 Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Carol)

Despite many accolades for her performances during her illustrious career, David Fincher’s ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ is by far Rooney Mara’s most highly lauded film, and she was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy and the Golden Globes, among others. Mara has a long list of critically praised films to her name, including ‘The Social Network,’ ‘Kubo and the Two Strings,’ ‘Side Effects,’ and ‘Her,’ to name a few. She has transitioned from glamorous roles to character-based roles, defining her status as a seasoned actor in Hollywood. The violent rape scene in ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,’ as well as the numerous sex scenes Mara has appeared in, only demonstrate the actress’s artistic individuality, which is not only admirable but also worth remembering.

From Marvel’s Defenders franchise to character-oriented roles such as those in ‘Seven Pounds,’ and for her rare comic portrayals such as the one in ‘Top Five,’ Dawson has conquered most of the cinematic genres with her talent and prowess, appearing in over 70 different films and television shows, many of which were major blockbusters. Although she is not recognized for her on-screen nudity, one of her few naked appearances was in ‘Alexander,’ in which Colin Farrell played the titular character. She portrayed Roxana, the wife of Alexander the Great, who was an accused homosexual.

 Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades)

Although many viewers argue that the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ trilogy never featured any frontal nudity to begin with, there are several uncut versions that do have plenty of frontal nudity, although fleetingly. Dakota Johnson first rose to prominence with a modest role in ‘The Social Network,’ followed by her next big break in ’21 Jump Street.’ After her ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ debut, which rocketed her career graph and notoriety to a whole new level, she has subsequently acted in films such as ‘Black Mass,’ ‘A Bigger Splash,’ and ‘Suspiria,’ to mention a few. However, most of them were met with moderate success. Few people are aware that she is the daughter of former stars Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.

 Juno Temple (Killer Joe, Horns)

Juno Temple, an actress best renowned for her frontal naked appearances, however fleeting, is also a well-known character actress, often delivering ground-breaking yet underappreciated performances. Juno Temple debuted in the film ‘Pandaemonium,’ directed by her father Julien Temple. She has performed in close to fifty titles in smaller and larger roles – a remarkable feat for an actor who has yet to reach the age of 30. Despite her many nude on-screen appearances, her portrayal of full-frontal nudity alongside Matthew McConaughey in ‘Killer Joe’ was the buzz of the town.

Mischief is a cheerful teen comedy-drama about three teenagers dealing with raging hormones. Kelly Preston goes all out when it comes to nudity in one of the sequences, seducing the young and shy Jonathan. Though Preston is topless for the majority of the sequence, as the camera zooms out, you can see her entirely naked.

 Adrienne Corri (A Clockwork Orange)

This name was purposefully added to the list. The lone entry on the list where the actress becomes completely naked isn’t remotely sexy. Adrienne Cori has had a number of important parts during her career, but she is best remembered for her brief appearance in Stanley Kubrick’s eerily dystopian A Clockwork Orange. Alex strips her completely naked and raped her in a terrible incident (Malcolm McDowell). After two other actresses dropped out because the job was too humiliating for them, Kubrick commended Adrienne’s tolerance and comfort while filming the sequence in which she had to stand on a guy’s shoulders entirely naked for weeks and was repeatedly slapped by Malcolm to get the perfect shot.

 Heather Graham (Boogie Nights)

A film about the porn industry that does not contain any nudity would be an exception. Instead of depending on sophisticated camera angles and item placements to conceal Graham’s nether regions, we see her strip naked and leap into bed with Mark Wahlberg. Though Julianne Moore appears in the film, she is not seen entirely naked, at least not in this one. The film Shortcuts would be a fitting location to find Julianne Moore naked (1993).

 Carice van Houten (Game of Thrones)

Carice van Houten, best known as the “Red Woman” in the critically acclaimed British television drama “Game of Thrones,” was also known for her appearances in films such as “Dorothy Mills,” “Valkyrie,” and “Jackie,” to mention a few. Van Houten, a beloved and generally recognized Dutch actress, has made frontal nudity appearances in a number of other Dutch and European films in addition to Game of Thrones. Regardless, ‘Game of Thrones’ has increased her status as a formidable actress who has no qualms about expressing her artistic side – a fact for which she deserves all praise and applause.

The sexy French actress captured everyone’s attention with the famed lesbian sex scene with Lea Seydoux in ‘Blue is the Warmest Color,’ which was effectively Adele’s career-defining film. The story of Adele and Emma, two teens who fall in love, is told in ‘Blue is the Warmest Color,’ a controversial film that is also recognized as one of the most passionate lesbian love sagas ever created. Although Adele has yet to break through to the public and feature alongside Hollywood’s A-listers, ‘Blue is the Warmest Color’ was unquestionably her stepping stone to possible stardom.

Jennifer Connelly (Shelter, Requiem for a Dream)

Jennifer Connelly, often referred to as one of the most beautiful women in the world, requires no introduction. Jennifer Connelly, best renowned for her roles in horror and thriller films, has come a long way from her debut (horror) film ‘Phenomena’ to her 2017 film ‘Only the Brave.’ Known for her award-winning performances in films such as ‘A Beautiful Mind,’ ‘Requiem for a Dream,’ ‘Hulk,’ ‘Dark Water,’ ‘Blood Diamond,’ ‘Winter’s Tale,’ ‘Aloft,’ ‘Noah,’ and ‘Shelter,’ to mention a few, there isn’t a film in which her performance was not acclaimed or appreciated. Although Connelly hasn’t shied away from displaying on-screen nudity, her frontal nudity moments first began with ‘Requiem for a Dream’ and were largely creative in nature.  Rachel Weisz (Stealing Beauty, I Want You)

Rachel Weisz, like Jennifer Connelly, has had a distinguished and distinguished acting career from the start. Weisz, a British actress by birth, played minor roles until the 1999 fictional action-horror picture ‘The Mummy,’ which turned heads. Helen Mirren isn’t afraid of being naked. Though she has done a slew of nude sequences, her monologue in Savage Messiah, in which she poses naked for a painter, stands out. You’d be hard pressed to find somebody delivering a brief monologue without their clothes on! She is so at ease taking off her clothing, even at her advanced age, that she admits she doesn’t care what guys in the audience think about her naked body beyond a certain point.

 Maria Schneider (Last Tango in Paris)

Another Bertolucci film, this one with Maria Schneider going entirely naked with Marlon Brando. Following that is a brutal rape scene in which Marlon Brando assaults Schneider. Schneider was apparently under the legal drinking age at the time, and the film as a whole is full of contentious situations.

Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water)

The comedy-drama ‘Happy-Go-Lucky,’ which garnered Hawkins multiple prizes, was her first break as a seasoned British actress. Her other prominent works include ‘Blue Jasmine,’ which became more famous for Cate Blanchett’s performance, ‘Jane Eyre,’ ‘Godzilla,’ ‘Paddington,’ and ‘The Shape of Water,’ to mention a few. Her first and only frontal nudity representation was in ‘The Shape of Water,’ a fantasy-drama that included revolutionary performances by Sally Hawkins and Michael Shannon and went on to win the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Direction, Production Design, and Original Score. Sally Hawkins was nominated for her performance as a mute girl stationed in a high-security research laboratory who falls in love with an Amazonian amphibian humanoid. Hawkins’ next appearance will be in ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

 Olivia Wilde (Vinyl)

Not only is Wilde one of the most daring actors working today, but she’s also one of Hollywood’s most attractive ladies, making everyone envious. Wilde was a series regular on the television show ‘House,’ where she played Dr. Remy Hadley. She also starred in films such as ‘The Girl Next Door,’ ‘Cowboys & Aliens,’ ‘Tron: Legacy,’ ‘In Time,’ ‘Rush,’ ‘Her,’ and ‘Meadowland,’ to name a few. Her naked appearances became increasingly well-known after she co-starred with Liam Neeson in ‘Third Person,’ followed by her explicit frontal nudity in the television drama ‘Vinyl.’ Wilde has appeared in over 50 films and television shows to date.

 Maggie Gyllenhaal (Secretary, The Deuce)

The critically praised picture ‘Secretary,’ which is perhaps one of Gyllenhaal’s most cherished films, also featured her sequences of frontal nudity as well as a ground-breaking performance. Vikander began her career with historical dramas such as ‘A Royal Affair,’ ‘Anna Karenina,’ and ‘Testament of Youth,’ before landing the ground-breaking part of Ava in ‘Ex Machina.’ Although there is some frontal nudity in ‘Ex Machina,’ it cannot be labeled explicit because Ava is a robot with human skin. Following the popularity of ‘Ex Machina,’ Vikander has acted in a variety of films in genres such as comedy, action, drama, romance, and fantasy. Her performance as Lara Croft in the reboot of ‘Tomb Raider’ was both praised and panned for being gritty, realistic, and thrilling to the core.

 Alexandra Daddario (True Detective)

The 32-year-old actress began her cinematic career as a youngster in numerous teen fantasy films such as the ‘Percy Jackson’ franchise, horror films such as ‘The Attic,’ ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D,’ and thrillers such as ‘Bereavement,’ ‘San Andreas,’ and so on. Her explicit nudity, on the other hand, was only seen in ‘True Detective’ alongside Woody Harrelson, where she was shown stripping naked in one of the episodes. An intriguing truth about one of the world’s most beautiful women is that she has had a no-nudity clause in all of her contracts since the beginning of her acting career. ‘Under the Skin,’ a film by many measures, starred Scarlett Johansson as an alien that draws lonely men into a mysterious space called “void” and takes their organs. Although there are a few sequences in which Johansson is entirely naked, the suggestion is that because she’s playing an extraterrestrial, it wouldn’t be considered human female nudity. Regardless, ‘Under the Skin’ is the first Scarlett Johansson picture in which the actress performed a fully-nude sequence, albeit not sexual in nature, and the film also offers an exceptional performance, possibly her best acting performance to date.  Kate Winslet (Jude, The Reader)

There are far too many films in which Kate Winslet does not remove her clothing. In fact, she has gotten naked in four of the six roles for which she has been nominated for an Academy Award. Her famous drawing room scene in Titanic will live on in the imaginations of moviegoers forever, but few are aware that she bared her full body for her role in Jude (1994), in which she enables a guy to take her virginity. The Reader is another important mention in which she is completely naked.

 Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct)

I don’t think I need to say much more here. Surprisingly, I don’t recall a single scene in this film in which Sharon Stone showed her complete frontal naked body. There are several sequences in which Stone is naked in bed with Michael Douglas, but the reason I placed her name on this list is for that one memorable scene. As a suspect, she is quizzed by cops as she switches between crossed legs, giving the viewer a complete view of what is behind the white dress.

 Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street)

Margot Robbie, the new chic on the block and possibly Martin Scorsese’s best blonde bombshell discovery yet, appears in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. When watching a Scorsese picture, you should expect some sexual behavior in an unusual way. Robbie, on the other hand, appears completely naked in one of the scenes shortly before she and Leo have sex. It was a surprise because Robbie was only 23 at the time, but boy did she pull it off.

 Tilda Swinton (Female Perversions)

Tilda Swinton, a British actress, is widely regarded as one of the greatest artists to have ever lived. Swinton, an Academy Award winner, has acted in a plethora of films and television shows, the most of which were box office smashes and have since gained cult status. Her film ‘Female Perversions’ tells the story of Eve, an attorney in Los Angeles who has an unhappy sex relationship and seeks relief from her daily erotic nightmares. Although Swinton has made naked appearances in a number of films, ‘Female Perversions’ is the only one in which she has donned frontal nudity. Swinton has appeared in almost 70 films and television shows.

 Eva Green (The Dreamers)

Dreamers (2003) features plenty of nudity, as one would expect from a Bernardo Bertolucci picture. The film follows twins Theo and Isabelle (Eva Green) and an American student Matthew as they interact and become entangled erotically. Green has supplied several full frontal naked images in the film, and there is even a sequence in which she performs oral sex on one of her co-stars. Another recent example is Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For (2014), in which Eva Green plays a devious seductress who bares it all in multiple sequences.

 Monica Bellucci (Irreversible, Malena)
