‘The Kissing Booth,’ one of the most recent entry into the world of chick flicks, is a girl flick in its core. Elle (Joey King) is drawn to Noah, her best friend Lee’s brother, by the idea of a kissing booth set up during a school carnival. ‘The Kissing Booth’ became famous perhaps because of its protagonists, the sultriness associated with the characters, and the ambiguity surrounding teenagers and their perspective on long-term relationships, which is a relatable affair on so many levels, despite critics dismissing it as having a sexist and racial outlook on relationships and the stereotypes associated with it. Also, the plot is a little different from conventional high-school romcoms, and owing to Joey King’s huge fame after her stints in numerous similar films at a young age, ‘The Kissing Booth’ was bound to be a success. Love, Guaranteed (2020)
Nick Evans (Damon Wayans Jr.) has been on nearly a thousand dates (all properly documented) via a dating service but is still unmarried. He intends to sue the website for making implausible promises. Susan (Rachael Leigh Cook) is a hardworking lawyer who has been working pro gratis for far too long and is now in desperate need of a miracle. As Nick Evan’s high-paying case falls into her lap, feelings between the two begin to develop, potentially jeopardizing everything. The idea for the film, which was also produced by Rachael Leigh Cook, was inspired by a lawsuit brought against a beer manufacturer that claimed to create its beer using “pure Rocky Mountain spring water.”
When We First Met (2018)
Inspired by “Groundhog Day” and “About Time,” “When We First Met” follows Noah, who is friend-zoned by Avery, the girl of his dreams, after their first date. However, three years later, he is given the opportunity to travel back in time and change that night (again and over), in the hopes of winning Avery’s heart. This Netflix Original film takes a unique spin on the time-travel love trope. To begin with, it is kind, hilarious, and down-to-earth. Noah leaves no stone unturned in his pursuit of Avery across multiple timelines, only to discover that Avery is not meant to be his. Falling Inn Love (2019)
When everything seems to be going wrong for Gabriela Diaz (Christina Milian), she wins an inn in New Zealand in an online sweepstakes. She has no further plans now that she has lost her job and her lover. She accepts the offer on the spur of the moment and visits the rustic inn, The Bellbird Valley Farm, which is now hers. Her adventures begin when she discovers that the inn is not what it appears to be in the images, and that Jake Taylor (Adam Devos) is her only hope. As they work on rebuilding the inn, feelings arise between them. But her life in San Francisco awaits her; will she return or stay?
Our Souls at Night (2017)
This film emphasizes on the value of company in the lives of humans, and it is a poignant film about the loneliness that surrounds people in old age. Robert Redford and Jane Fonda play neighbors Louis and Addie, who find solace in each other’s company after struggling with their loneliness. Both have lost their spouses and are lonely when the night falls. Addie invites Louis to share her bed on a very platonic level. Just so they may converse and sleep with someone. Dear John (2010)
‘Dear John,’ based on Nicholas Sparks’ novel of the same name, is a romantic war drama film starring Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried, Henry Thomas, and Scott Porter. The difficult relationship of John Tyree, a soldier, and Savannah Curtis, a college student, is the subject of Lasse Hallström’s directorial debut. The odd couple falls in love immediately after meeting, but the couple suffers various hardships over the years due to John’s multiple deployments. Despite the fact that their love becomes stronger with time, the couple’s correspondence has devastating effects.
Set It Up (2018)
‘Set It Up,’ a surprisingly fresher take on an otherwise tired subgenre, was well received by moviegoers and critics alike, while adhering to the standard chick film “pattern.” Harper and Charlie work as aides to their demanding, workaholic bosses, Kirsten and Rick. Harper and Charlie decide they need to get their employers bedded after they meet for the first time while going to get supper for their bosses. The wild story begins with Charlie and Harper attempting to set up their superiors, but their tactics are not immediately effective. As they constantly strive to hook up their bosses, they learn they, too, have sentiments and likes to share, and thus all ends happily. ‘Set It Up’ is both predictable and intriguing, which is a rare quality in this subgenre’s films. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)
‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,’ one of the most recent Netflix Originals to make our list, is a witty, teenage romantic drama with a lot of unboxed surprises. Lara Jean is a high school adolescent who is hesitant to commit to a long-term relationship. As it turned out, she had written love letters to her crushes over the years but had never mailed them. Looking at her sister’s situation, Lara’s sister Kitty uploads all of the letters to those crushes, resulting in plenty of awkwardness later on. Only one of those crushes would eventually be Lara’s. The characters is refreshing, as is the story, which deviates from teenage dramedy conventions. Watch it right here.
Five Feet Apart (2019)
‘Five Feet Apart,’ a love drama film created by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis, stars Haley Lu Richardson, Cole Sprouse, and Moisés Arias. Justin Baldoni’s directorial debut centres around Stella, a young adult with cystic fibrosis who has to live a very limited existence due to her ailment. While she has always followed all of the rules, things take an unexpected turn when she meets Will, who is also suffering from the same disease as she is. As their affection grows stronger, the couple finds it increasingly difficult to stick to the tight lifestyle that has been forced on them thus far.
Sierra Burgess Is a Loser (2019)
The high school drama begins with an unexpected romance caused by mistaken identity and ends with a message of body positivity and confidence. The most popular girl in high school and a girl on the social periphery become friends in order to support one other and win over their crushes, but it is not such an easy path. This Netflix Original stars Shannon Purser, Kristine Froseth, RJ Cyler, and Noah Centineo. ‘Sierra Burgess Is a Loser,’ while a bit of a stretch, should be taken with a grain of salt because the film has a number of problematic elements, including homophobic slurs, a joke at disabilities, and cyberbullying, to mention a few.
Tramps (2016)
‘Tramps,’ a charming narrative of romance and comedy, is about a duo that meet through some strange turn of events and then go head-first into a madcap journey. The story begins with Danny (Callum Turner), an ambitious chef striving to make ends meet with his mother and brother. On the other hand, there is a young crook named Ellie (Grace Van Patten) who has come to New York for a score. Danny makes a rookie error when he replaces his brother to meet Ellie and exchange a briefcase with someone, and he ends up with the wrong briefcase. This sends Danny and Ellie on a trek throughout New York in search of the briefcase that was meant for them. The picture is full with romance, comedy, thrills, and drama, and it is a riveting movie in general. ‘Tramps,’ a well acted and directed film, should be high on your Netflix watchlist.
Paris Is Us (2019)
It is uncommon to find someone without ambitions in this day and age. Everyone nowadays wants to achieve more and obtain places in society that will make their lives simpler. But how will you react if you meet someone who has no objectives and is content with his or her life as it is? This is exactly the situation of Anna, the main heroine in ‘Paris Is Us.’ She abandons her relationship with Greg because she want to remain in Paris while Greg is required to work as an air traffic controller in Barcelona. Anna, on the other hand, is content with her waitressing job. We encounter her at a point in her life when she is considering how many relationships a single airplane accident may impact, or whether life is always governed by an outside force. The film’s premise is moving, but it lacks coherence in terms of what it is attempting to tell in the first place. The director attempts a “stream of consciousness” approach to the entire event, but films are not the appropriate medium for this strategy to function.
Let It Snow (2019)
‘Let It Snow,’ based on the novel of the same name by Maureen Johnson, Lauren Myracle, and John Green, tells the story of a group of people who are pulled together on Christmas Eve owing to a snowstorm in the little town of Laurel, Illinois. It creates excitement for the holiday season as it shows youngsters falling in and out of love, featuring a subplot of a lesbian couple, and is directed by British director Luke Snellin. The brilliantly rendered drama is praised for the ensemble cast of young and talented actors, each of whom skillfully engages the spectators. The video was shot in Toronto and Millbrook, Ontario in February of 2019.
Elisa & Marcela (2019)
‘Elisa And Marcela,’ a biographical love film, tells the story of Spain’s first same-sex marriage. The story begins in 1885, when Elisa and Marcela first meet, and their friendship quickly evolves into a full-fledged relationship. They keep their love a secret for 16 years, and it is only in 1901 that Elisa disguises himself as a man, obtains the appropriate legal identification credentials, and then marries Marcela. The film is based on a creative concept, but the execution falls short of expectations. The film remains a futile endeavor, having failed to develop engaging characters or scenes to keep people engaged.
About Time (2013)
‘About Time,’ a love story with a heavy dose of fantasy, tells the narrative of Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson), who learns from his father that the male members of his family have the unusual ability to travel across time. Tim determines that he must put this gift to use in order to make his life more exciting. As a result, Tim employs his abilities to find himself a girlfriend. Soon, he finds that the power of time travel alone is insufficient to win certain people’s hearts. He does find a girlfriend in Mary (Rachel McAdams), using his power and a little trickery to make her fall in love with him. We can say that the film has the best of both worlds. There’s a comedy, a romance, a drama, and some magic. They all work together to provide you with a healthy dose of enjoyment.
The Perfect Date (2019)
Noah Centineo appears to be the poster boy for rom-coms, with yet another picture in which he plays the lead. ‘The Perfect Date’ is about a dating app established by two buddies to look impressive on their college applications. The software allows the customer to specify what they want in a date, such as a poet, a musician, a nice and friendly person, someone with specific tastes, mannerisms, or similar hobbies, and so on. The story depicts not just the highs and lows of friendship, but also how we grow to accept ourselves and come into our own. This film may appear formulaic, yet it has an obvious feel-good factor.
The Lovebirds (2020)
This entertaining film, set in New Orleans, is more focused on humor than romance, as a couple becomes involved in a crime in the most unexpected and weird manner. It’s their story about how they try to get out of a sticky situation and get through a particularly difficult night. The slightly caustic humor in their chats, though, and the sharp exchanges that come from years of familiarity, take the cake. This one is a heartwarming comedy about an inter-racial couple, Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) and Leilani Brooks (Issa Rae), who bicker about seemingly insignificant matters.
Always Be My Maybe (2019)
‘Always Be My Maybe,’ directed by Nahnatchka Khan, is a poignant romantic comedy film about two childhood sweethearts who meet again as adults. The film’s plot revolves around Sasha Tran and Marcus Kim, two children who grow up as neighbors and become close friends. Sasha frequently visits Marcus’ house for dinner, where his mother frequently teaches her how to cook. They stop seeing one other after a bitter argument and only run into each other sixteen years later, when Sasha is a successful chef and Marcus is a musician in a local band. Will they be able to put their differences aside and reunite once more? Keep an eye out for Keanu Reeves, who plays himself in the film and plays an unusual role. The two principal performers, Ali Wong and Randall Park, must be praised for their superb chemistry and humorous timing. The film is not only a fantastic romantic comedy, but it also contains carefully veiled social commentary regarding Asian-American living in San Francisco.
Someone Great (2019)
After a terribly painful break-up, this touching and hilarious narrative taps into the comfort of friendship. Jenny Young (Gina Rodriguez) and Nate Davis (Lakeith Stanfieldonce-perfect )’s romance must come to an end as they choose divergent paths professionally and personally. Jenny wants one last blowout with her pals Blair Helms (Brittany Snow) and Erin Kennedy on the eve of her departure from New York City (DeWanda Wise). If you’re looking for something to watch with your girlfriends, this is it. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the writer and director, guides us through this journey, which, in the end, lets us realize that it is not about meeting “someone amazing,” but about being that someone.
Something Borrowed (2011)
‘Something Borrowed,’ directed by Luke Greenfield, is a romantic comedy film based on Emily Giffin’s novel of the same name. Rachel, a successful attorney in her early 30s who has yet to meet the love of her life, is the protagonist of the film. She ends up having an affair with her longtime crush, Dex, on her birthday, upsetting her relationship with her friend Darcy in the process. Rachel discusses the secret with Ethan, entirely ignorant that he also is hiding an explosive secret, as she believes that the affair may ultimately lose her a lasting relationship.
